Critical Phenomena and Renormalization-Group Theory

چکیده
We review results concerning the critical behavior of spin systems at equilibrium. We consider the Ising and the general O(N)-symmetric universality class. For each of them, we review the estimates of the critical exponents, of the equation of state, of several amplitude ratios, and of the two-point function of the order parameter. We report results in three and two dimensions. We discuss the crossover phenomena that are observed in this class of systems. In particular, we review the field-theoretical and numerical studies of systems with medium-range interactions. Moreover, we consider several examples of magnetic and structural phase transitions, which are described by more complex Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson Hamiltonians, such as N -component systems with cubic anisotropy, O(N)-symmetric systems in the presence of quenched disorder, frustrated spin systems with noncollinear or canted order, and finally, a class of systems described by the tetragonal Landau-GinzburgWilson Hamiltonian with three quartic couplings. The results for the tetragonal Hamiltonian are original, in particular we present the six-loop perturbative series for the β-functions and the critical exponents.

Critical Phenomena: Landau Theory and the Renormalization Group Method
We first discuss a phenomenological mean-field theory of phase transitions due to Landau and introduce the ideas of universality and scaling near critical points. The breakdown of mean-field theory near a critical point leads us to introduce the renormalization group method, which has had a major impact on our understanding of phase transitions, quantum field theory, and turbulence. We introduc...
متن کاملRenormalization Group: Applications in Statistical Physics
These notes aim to provide a concise pedagogical introduction to some important applications of the renormalization group in statistical physics. After briefly reviewing the scaling approach and Ginzburg–Landau theory for critical phenomena near continuous phase transitions in thermal equilibrium, Wilson’s momentum shell renormalization group method is presented, and the critical exponents for ...
متن کاملIntroduction to Renormalization Group and Ward Identities in Critical Phenomena and in Fermi and Bose Liquids
We review some of the main applications of the renormalization-group technique in condensed matter physics. The first relevant example is the description of critical phenomena. Here perturbation theory is affected by singularities, which are a consequence of the long-ranged character of the dominant fluctuations when approaching criticality. The use of renormalization group allows to sum up the...

A generalized real-space renormalization scheme is developed for geometrical critical phenomena The renormalization group is parametrized by the standard length-scaling factor and a new redangular area-fraction factor. This rectangular renormalization scheme utilizes relatively small r e m g u l a r sublanices to effeaively renormalize large square lattices. With the area-fraction factor, one c...

متن کامل2 Calculation of the dynamical critical exponent
A new method based on the R-operation of the renormalization theory is proposed for the numerical calculation of the renormalization constants in the theory of critical behaviour. The problem of finding residues of the poles of the Green’s functions at ε = 0, where ε = 4−d, is reduced to the evaluation of multiple UV-finite integrals, which can be performed by means of standard integration prog...
